We can all agree that we would love purchases that lasted forever. A jumper that didn’t stretch, a microwave that didn’t mysteriously stop working, and a hair tie that didn’t snap. *Chefs kiss*
But! Packaging is something we definitely do NOT want to last forever.
Did you know that plastic bottles can take 450 years to decompose!? To put that into perspective, 450 years ago, Shakespeare was eight years old. To bin, or not to bin? That is the question. Eco-friendly packaging is the answer.
Eco-friendly packaging is not just a “now” solution, it is a solution that changes the future. Our future. Your future!
What exactly is eco-friendly packaging?
Eco-friendly, refillable, and compostable packaging is packaging that has a loop life cycle rather than a line. It is packaging that can be reused or broken down to give back to the earth. Unlike plastic packaging, eco-friendly packaging - Australia especially, is becoming the future of packaging, and we are all for it!
But what makes eco-friendly packaging different? The magic of science! *oooooh*
Usually made from plant-based and organic materials (such as natural plant starch), eco-friendly packaging isn’t toxic and is quick to break down naturally. Unlike plastic, it doesn’t pollute waterways or the environment.
Landfill
No thanks.
Recycle
Cardboard packaging and mailers can be recycled with your household recycling, but better yet...
Reuse
• Upcycle your cardboard mailer for gift packaging! This can be cardboard gift tags or the gift box itself.
• Lay cardboard over your garden bed (where weeds usually grow), wet it with water and add some mulch over the top. Excellent weed stopper!
• Cardboard party decorations such as bunting or name signs. Very thrifty!
• New cardboard house/bed for your demanding feline friend. That sounds purrfect to me!
• Finally, reuse your compost mailer bag. You can use it as a compost bin liner. Keep your food scrap smell in and, when it is full, place it in your compost bin to break down with the rest!

Compost
Packaging that is produced with plant-based, organic materials such as our compostable mailer bags and Refill Bars can also be added to compost. Learn how to compost Pleasant State wrappers.
Very simply put, compost is organic matter that has been “recycled”. Organic materials and matter break down over time due to exposure to natural elements such as air, heat, water, and bacteria. This compost can then be added to the soil to help fertilise the garden.
But be careful, just because a product says “compostable”, that doesn’t specify if the product can be composted at home or not. Are you wondering what the difference is?
Home Composting is suitable for breaking down food scraps, garden clippings, cardboard, paper, and organic, plant-based packaging. Home composting (usually a barrel or bin in the garden) does not reach a hot enough temperature to break down meat, dairy, or bioplastic products.
Industrial Composting is a multi-step facility that is suitable for any of the above items, plus, bioplastic products such as compostable cups, bottles, etc.
For example, If you attend a birthday party and you use a “compostable” bioplastic cup. Chances are, you can’t compost that cup at home, as it will take higher heat levels to break down.
Handy Tip #1: Shredding your home-compostable mailers and refill packs will help them break down faster in your compost.
Handy Tip #2: If you don’t have a compost or green waste bin you can visit ShareWaste.com to see if there are any communal compost bins near you!
